Protecting Your Heart - Green Tea and Green Tea Extract

Studies have concluded recently that including Green Tea and/or Green Tea Extract into your diet may be very wise regarding your heart health. Currently, heart disease is the number 1 killer of US citizens so understanding how green tea or green tea extract works in your system to defend against coronary illness may be extremely valuable information for many.
Studies have shown that green tea can combat heart disease in few ways:
Green Tea Extract Can Reduce Cholesterol
Recent studies at the "Cedars-Sinai Medical Center" have supported this . Of course, knowing that you should keep your arteries clear from bad cholesterol is nothing new, yet many people are unaware that drinking green tea can be a totally effective and safe way to accomplish this. Green tea's powerful antioxidant properties can reduce plaque build up ( bad cholesterol or "Low density lipoproteins (LDL)" ) in the arteries which can directly cause heart attack and stroke.
Another relatively recent ( 2003 )12 week study from the "Archives of Internal Medicine" showed that participants taking green tea extract had a drop in "bad" cholesterol of 15% and their "total" cholesterol fell by 10%.
Green Tea Can Reduce Cell Damage
The powerful component in Green tea and green tea extract "EGCG" has the amazing ability to speed recovery of damaged cells. During a stroke or heart attack many cells are damaged due to lack of oxygen to the brain, and much of the cell damage is irreversible which is known as "cell death". Green Tea's powerful antioxidant properties can reduce the level of cell death that occurs after heart attack and stroke.
A cup of green tea provides upwards of 40mg of polyphenols ( catechin group) and has antioxidant activity greater than a serving of broccoli, spinach, carrots or strawberries. EGCG is a powerful catechin, a biological compound produced in green tea that is responsible for the amazing inherent antioxidant properties which are so beneficial.
How much Green Tea is Effective?
While there is no RDA for Green tea or Green tea extract since it's not considered an essential nutrient it has been reported that taking about 240-320mg daily is beneficial to overall heart health. This benefit can be derived from drinking about 4 cups of green tea daily or taking one 300mg green tea extract capsule daily. There is no difference in potency; the extract is recommended for those who may not like to drink tea but still want the powerful health benefits.
So, drinking just a few cups of green tea daily could become part of your heart disease prevention routine, along with a sane diet plan and exercise you should surely be much more healthy and of course, feel great. It's very low cost, has virtually no side effects (there is 40mg of caffeine in 8 oz cup of tea, much less than coffee however) is totally natural and is delicious hot or cold!

Drinking Tea May Guard Against Ovarian Cancer

And each additional cup of tea per day appears to provide significantly more protection, investigators found. Consuming two or more cups of tea a day over a period of time may reduce the risk of ovarian cancer dramatically, suggests a new study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine.
Because tea is the second most-consumed beverage in the world, its potential health benefits could have important implications for human health and disease prevention, says the Tea Council of the USA.
This is good news and points to yet another area where tea may have a positive effect on health." "These new findings suggest that drinking tea regularly may help to reduce the risk of ovarian cancer as well. "An abundance of research suggests that tea may play a role in the reduction of risk of cardiovascular disease and various types of cancer," notes Joe Simrany, president of the trade organization.
46 Percent Lower Ovarian Cancer Risk
Researchers at Sweden's National Institute of Environmental Medicine, Karolinska Institutet, examined the association between tea consumption and risk of ovarian cancer in 61,057 women 40 to 76 years of age who took part in the population-based Swedish Mammography Cohort.
The participants completed a validated 67-item food frequency questionnaire at enrollment between 1987 and 1990, and were followed for cancer incidence through December 2004.
At baseline, 68 percent of the participants reported drinking tea -- primarily black tea -- at least once a month. During 15.1 years of follow-up, 301 women were diagnosed as having epithelial ovarian cancer. The researchers found tea consumption of two or more cups of tea per day had a significant inverse association with risk of ovarian cancer.
Specifically, women who drank two or more cups of tea per day experienced a 46 percent lower risk of ovarian cancer, compared with women who drank no tea. Each additional cup of tea was associated with an 18 percent decreased risk of ovarian cancer.
Additional Health Benefits
A multitude of research studies suggest that drinking tea may contribute to overall health. Potential benefits include the following:
- Reduced risk of heart attack and stroke, and improved blood vessel function;
- Less risk of certain cancers, including colorectal and skin cancers;
- Decreased levels of oxidative DNA damage and increases in antioxidant levels in the bloodstream; and
- Oral health benefits -- researchers believe certain compounds in tea may inhibit bacteria that cause bad breath and plaque, and the fluoride content in tea supports healthy tooth enamel.

Drinking Tea May Help Cut Ovarian Cancer Risk

Drinking tea may help women cut ovarian cancer risk, says a study by Swedish researchers that finds more health benefits of tea.
Earlier research has shown tea helps to protect against several type of cancer and boosts memory.
Now researchers led by Susanna Larsson at Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, found that at least two cups the risk of ovarian cancer by 46 percent because of its antioxidants content, and reported the online edition of BBC News.
The women were followed up until December 2004 to see if they got cancer. The researchers questioned 61,057 women aged 40 to 76 about their eating and drinking habits between 1987 and 1990.
The research revealed that 68 percent of women reported drinking tea - mainly black tea- at least once a month. During the study, a total of 301 women were diagnosed with ovarian cancer.
Researchers said they saw a 46 percent lower risk of ovarian cancer in women who drank two or more cups of tea per day compared with those who didn't drink tea.
Women who drink one cup[ of tea a day had a 24 percent reduced risk, while those having less than one cup had 18 percent less risk.
The study is the first to specifically examine the relationship between the consumption and ovarian cancer risk, it said.
The Archives of Internal Medicine study said more research was needed, and British experts added there was still no proof of the benefits.
However, Larsson said: "In summary, our results from a large population -based cohort of Swedish women suggest that tea consumption may lower the risk of ovarian cancer."
